Back from the Summer

Well I never left, I just had my equipment in boxes while I was out of college.

Not like anyone is reading this, this is basically my private-public online journal (oxymoron, no?)

I tried to go back to digital painting once more. I found out that my absence in the digital medium did more harm to me than good. Maybe I was too excited to start, that I forgot to plan ahead. Either way, I gave up on it.

That doesn't mean I gave up on the idea. This time around, I'll be planning out the character, the position of the sketch, etc. Learn from my mistakes

On a different note, I tried to make chibis! I tried to create something that was in between caricatures and traditional chibis, but it came out to be an unholy mix between chibis and Rugrats. Oh well, I'll learn from this as well!

Revert

I'm temporarily halting my tablet use. It feels that I'm hurting my skills, so I'm going to start coloring with markers. Maybe I'll find a painting technique that I can imitate when I get back to tablet work.

The image on the left is of Ophiuchus, drawn for a weekly activity at the WIP Podcast forums, which focused on zodiac signs. This piece was the beginning of drawing traditionally. I felt that the scratch markings all around the image was too boring, so I went over on GIMP and added a background texture, plus a gradient to frame the figure (I may not be painting, but I might as well use some technology for my benefit. What is not seen in the image is the sketch that was drawn using a red charcoal pencil. That was also removed using GIMP, leaving only lines that I wanted (from the pencil outline). I forgot how charcoal is very messy :P.

On the right were some concepts for the theme of music for the same forums. The idea of insects and musical instruments seem to fit very well. So I made beetles that represent a guitar, and a lyre (misspelled as lye :\).

And finally, a sneak peak at a fictional city that I am working on for my future webcomic. I barely added some buildings for the central part of the city. I wanted to give a variety of sizes and orientation, I'll possibly added different shapes to other buildings as well, since all of them are box looking. The city has a scale of three to four miles in diameter. Forming a city from the ground up is hard!

I hope to come back using the tablet with a more knowledgeable approach at drawing and painting. And possibly have a greater understanding in what style I want to incorporate on my webcomic.

Not much has happened

Drawing and painting-wise, nothing has happened. It feels like I'm overexerting myself when it comes to sketching, nothing feels right.

I know this will pass, it always has.

Just updating, I'm still trying to find a method on coloring, and a WIP shot of something that is already finished.

Practice, Experimentation, and Progress

The lineart for Aerith is from Robaato, and I colored it as a practice as to how I would color my own webcomic. The first images is a painting that I just can't pull myself to finish, and the second one is a speed painting of the story, "The Girl Without Hands." and the last image is another fractal.

I guess this week's theme is all about females. :P

Sketchbook Ideas

A few drawings and notes from my sketchbook. It's an idea of mine that I've been creating for a webcomic that I've been toying with.

Fun with Apophysis

Just a few of the images that I made while playing around with Apophysis. some of the images are really low quality/ renders.

All but the middle are digitally manipulated to look that way. The middle one was created by accident. :)

Melting Sun

The process took me about two or three days, and I'm happy with the results. It seems that I'm regaining progress again.

The finished piece was a result of some feedback on a Livestream hosted by WIPpodcast (http://jeffreyhimmelman.com/wip/), the speed painting had a lot of anatomy issues, and cleaning up to do.

Somebody mentioned that the process itself seemed like it was more photoshop than painting (I acutally use GIMP). I do use layer blending modes to paint, maybe it's time to cut on layers, and use those custom brushes that I always make.

On becoming better

Like almost every budding artist, I taught myself the basics of drawing. From then on, I branched off and honed those skills.

I can't wait to take a drawing class in college. I've been wanting to since all of my pre-college days. I was sort of jealous of students from other schools having the option of taking an art class.

Speed panting is something that I've recently took up. hopefully it will discipline me in seeing bigger shapes, rather than the details. Some day I hope to inspired young artists.

More than a year...

It's been more than a year since I created this blog. Surely I should have forgotten about it a long time ago. but I have the inspiration of using it for something better. I guess I'll post random scraps of sketches and speed paintings in order to digitally chronicle my progress.

So here's a speed painting of Death and a faun that I made recently.

Here's to having an obscure blog. :)
